Why Kona® cotton?

Kona® cotton is a lovely broadcloth from Robert Kaufman Fabrics. Both the fabric and family firm have a long history (more 30 years and more 70 years, respectively).

I use Kona to line many of our bags and also to create the side bands on most tambourine totes.

Kona comes in an intoxicating array of colors. That keeps the artist in me happy. What keeps the Earthling in me happy is the fact that Kona is Oeko-tex® certified. While that’s not quite “organic,” it does mean that it’s independently tested to verify that no harmful chemicals were used in production or processing - and it’s the only quilting solid that carries that assurance.

As a side note, we also use the firm’s batik basecloth for our own dyeing and marbling,
